The Best Jeans Silhouette...
...just so happens to be the latest. And you can spend $15 or $200, it's your call.
Let’s talk style. Real style. And allow me to point out that: the information I am about to give you is literally mostly worth $200 minus $15, which equals $185. What I’m about to tell you is worth $185, more or less.
Back to the subject of style…
Fashion says “me too”.
Style says, “me alone”.
Fashion borrows information from perceived trend setters, even if the trend setter is a best friend. Style, on the other hand, is story-driven, intensely personal, and takes its cues from ones own passion, inkling, expression and inclination.
When it comes to clothing style, I’ve learned to think far less about Pantone’s “color of the year”, or whether to wear patterns or solids, long or short hems, or even “fast versus slow fashion”. I think far more of silhouette.
Silhouette is king. Or, in our case, silhouette is queen. Certain silhouettes just translate better than others on a woman’s middle-body.
When it comes to jeans, I’ve done every. silhouette. ever. offered.
I did low-rise in the early 2000’s.
(This is not me ;) )
Who remembers those 2.5” zippers? Low-rise is the only silhouette that, in my opinion, should be shipped straight to Sheol (the dark underworld) in a basket. May it never return.
I also did the skinny jeans (and still do, if there’s spandex involved, and if the silhouette calls for it).
Then, there’s the “flare” silhouette. I currently sometimes channel my inner flower child, and rock a gentle flare leg:
Note: the platform heel is part of this silhouette. An important part.
I’ve done button-fly, fake fly pull-on Spanx-type (another “ugh”), high rise, and mid-rise. I’ve done wide leg, acid-wash, two-tone, and even overalls. (::shudder:: that was one of those rare moments when I succumbed to fashion, instead of sticking to my own style.)
I’ve done the ripped knees (and I still like them, with restraint):
I still own and love a vintage pair of mid-rise boot-cut jeans:
Right now, though, all the praise-hands go to what just so happens to be the latest/greatest silhouette (drumroll, please):
The high-rise boyfriend jean
(…this is also not me. This is a screen-shot of the “slim boyfriend grand jeans” by Mott and Bow.)
This particular pair will set you back almost $200. They can set you back more than $200, depending on the brand. (And please do include the Oxford shoes…be still my heart.)
At the risk of sounding super-bougie, a pair of jeans that looks and feels this good, that I plan on wearing for over a decade (oh trust me, I do and I will) would be worth that price.
But leave it to me to find something equal or better, for less than a tenth of that price tag!
Here’s my version:
Here’s the same pair, UN-rolled at the hem:
Price paid? $15.
“But HOW?!” (I hear you asking me.) I am about to swear you to secrecy.
